ORGANIZATION: Children's Tumor Foundation

Sweet Tea for Sophie
The idea was started because this kid sister named Sophie, has NF and her brothers wanted to do something about it.

What a Sweet Way to Fund a Cure for Neurofibromatosis

Why do we need a cure?
Because this tumor causing genetic disorder affects 1 in 3,000 people including a little girl named Sophie. Her big brothers wanted to find a way to raise funds and awareness for vital research being done by the Children’s Tumor Foundation. They found that selling sweet tea for their baby sister was a perfect way to do just that. They concocted their own secret recipe and set up a table in our front yard. Selling Sweet Tea for Sophie is one of their favorite things to do. And we love that they are learning to give of themselves to charity, especially one that we hold near and dear to our hearts.

Several McAlisters locations will be setting up Sweet Tea for Sophie stands outside their stores and will be providing all the tea, and supplies. It will be sold for 100% donations only. The only skills required are the willingness to engage people in conversation with a positive attitude while pouring a glass of Sweet Tea. We encourage families to volunteer together as it is a great learning experience for children and aligns with our origins. Shifts are: 11AM-2PM and2PM-5PM. We would like a minimum of 2 volunteers per shift.

Please see our other locations as well or visit: http://www.ctf.org/events/sweet-tea-for-sophie to see how you can host a stand of your own.

Mission Statement

The Children's Tumor Foundation's mission is to drive research, expand knowledge, and advance care for the NF community.

Description

Neurofibromatosis, or NF, is a genetic disorder that affects one in every 3,000 people. It can cause tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body, and complications from NF can lead to disfigurement, deafness, blindness, skeletal abnormalities, learning disabilities, malignancies, and debilitating pain. NF affects all populations equally, and there is not yet a cure.

The Children’s Tumor Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to finding effective treatments for the millions of people worldwide living with neurofibromatosis (NF), a term for three distinct disorders: NF1, NF2, and schwannomatosis. NF causes tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body and may lead to blindness, deafness, bone abnormalities, disfigurement, learning disabilities, disabling pain, and cancer. NF affects 1 in every 3,000 births across all populations equally. There is no cure yet - but the Children’s Tumor Foundation mission of driving research, expanding knowledge, and advancing care for the NF community fosters our vision of one day ending NF.
