Coastal Cactus Wren Point Count Volunteer

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: * Bird observations * Record location (bearing and distance) and other pieces of data

IMPACT: Opportunity to assist with bird monitoring research to examine the effectiveness of restoration efforts to benefit coastal cactus wrens

TRAINING: Staff and mentor training on-the job and additional enrichments

LOCATION: San Diego Zoo Safari Park Biodiversity Reserve

TIME COMMITMENT: One mandatory 2 hour training (Tuesday, April 3), one or more 4.5 hour shift from 6am-10:30 over the first three weeks of April.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: * Able to hike 3 miles with 10-15 pounds over 4.5 hours * Able to spend extended period outdoors in the sun

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: * Have a positive attitude and strictly adhere to SDZG policies, and procedures * Strong interest in birds and able to identify coastal cactus wren by sight and sound, distinguishing from mocking birds and others * Experience identifying birds (i.e. participation in Audubon Christmas Counts, regular personal birding experience, assistance in other monitoring programs) * Detail oriented & ability to multi-task
