ORGANIZATION: AIDS Foundation of Chicago

The AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) is seeking a creative and motivated individual to intern in its Policy and Advocacy Department to focus on the Illinois Getting to Zero Project. This is an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience while working at an active, upbeat non-profit.

The Getting to Zero project Intern will directly assist the Getting to Zero project manager and team with a wide range of projects related to the formation and implementation of a plan to bring an end to the HIV epidemic in Illinois by 2027. The Getting to Zero project intern will also have the opportunity to learn about HIV/AIDS prevention, care and advocacy, and other issues related to AFC’s mission as they work to engage and mobilize the statewide HIV community in our efforts to Get to Zero.

This person will work closely with Policy and Advocacy’s Manager of Special projects, as well as staff in the Care, Communications, Prevention, and REDS (Research, Evaluation and Data Services) teams.

This internship is designed to be both educational and practical. In this internship, the intern will learn how to take skills acquired in an educational setting and apply them in the workplace. The intern will gain a better understanding of the role that community can play in a non-profit setting, and be better prepared to work in the field of HIV/AIDS, public health, or public policy.

The Getting to Zero Intern will learn:

  • Vital collaboration skills by working with partner organizations and individuals at the local, regional, state and national levels.
  • How to work with communications teams to develop targeted materials for various and varied audiences, with the aim of educating advocates and organizers, and promoting in-person and digital engagement activities.
  • How to plan for, coordinate and facilitate meetings and conference calls with coalition members and stakeholders, and how to follow-up afterwards for maximum effectiveness.
  • Community organizing, specifically within the HIV community across all regions of Illinois, including the City of Chicago, with the aim of producing a strategic plan to end HIV in our state by 2027.
  • How to analyze and prioritize data collected from various methods of community engagement activities.
  • How to navigate public relations and marketing support for public health advocacy campaigns.
  • Become well-versed in numerous community health policies and issues facing those vulnerable to and living with HIV/AIDS.
  • The latest research and science on HIV/STD prevention, including the science and implementation of U=U (Undetectable equals Untransmittable) and the HIV prevention pill PrEP.

Qualifications:

  • Self-motivated and self-starter;
  • Ability to work in a group setting;
  • Exceptional writing and communications skills;
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and handle numerous assignments simultaneously;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and internet applications;
  • Have experience using social networking and online communications;
  • Passion for social justice issues and the fight against HIV/AIDS;
  • Volunteer experience or familiarity with HIV and/or non-profit organizations desired.

This internship is unpaid (stipend available). Details will be provided during the interview process. AFC can also help interns obtain college credit, if available from your school. Interns will receive necessary training and staff supervision. Internships require at least 10 hours/week for a minimum of 8 weeks, though longer internships are preferred.
