Job Summary - The Life Skills intern will assist program staff with the outreaching, preparations, and implementation of the Life Skills Training program for youth in Northern Virginia.

The Ethiopian Community Development Council, Inc. (ECDC), established in 1983, is a non-profit, community-based organization that advocates on behalf of refugee and immigrant issues; conducts cultural, health education, and socio-economic development programs; and resettles refugees in the U.S. Our clients come from countries such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Congo, Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Bhutan, Burma, and China.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Conducting outreach to potential hosts to develop new partnerships.
  • Distributing program information at targeted locations to assist with participant recruitment.
  • Assist with compiling materials, incentives, and snacks in preparation for each workshop session.
  • Attending the Life Skill Training sessions to assist with implementation and supervise the youth.
  • Assist the program staff with maintenance of program files and documentations.
  • Assist with other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum high school graduate. Preferred college degree or perusing an undergraduate degree in education, social work, health, language or related field required.
  • Must have strong interest in working with youth.
  • Position requires someone with Microsoft Office experience.
  • Previous experience working in multicultural contexts is desirable.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced environment and process unexpected tasks and deadlines.
  • Creativity and initiative to follow through on projects.
  • Effective communication and writing skills.
  • Proficiency in one or more language other than English is preferable.
  • Access to car preferable.

Time Requirements:

2 days a week

Mission Statement

The African Community Center of the DC Metro (ACC-DC) is a branch office of The Ethiopian Community Development Council, Inc. (ECDC), one of ten Resettlement Agencies authorized by the Department of State to resettle refugees. ECDC’s mission is to resettle and assist refugees and immigrants in integrating successfully into their new communities in the U.S.. ACC-DC is responsible for directly helping refugees located in the DC metro area with offices in Arlington, VA and Silver Spring, MD. ACC-DC provides social, educational, and employment programs for newly resettled refugees while working with community partners to promote self-sufficiency and integration across the DC area.

Description

ACC-DC is non-profit organization that works toward the resettlement of refugees within the United States. We conduct case work, as well as educational and social outreach programs for newly arrived refugee families. These programs are aimed to help the families recover from past traumatic experiences, get adjusted to American life, and become economically self-sufficient contributing members of their new communities. The refugees we work with refugees come from all across the globe.

Some of the services that we provide refugee families include:

  • Housing and rent for 3 months (families will hopefully be self-sufficient by this time)
  • Basic home furnishings
  • Enrollment in ESL classes
  • Setting up medical and social security appointments
  • School enrollment for the children
  • Helping refugee families connect with their new communities on a social and logistical level
