The Literacy Connection is part of the sponsored ministry at The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Boston. We are a non-profit volunteer organization which pairs volunteer tutors in one on one sessions with adult immigrants in need of ESL and literacy skills. Our volunteers are needed at our Brighton location (637 Cambridge Street) as well as in Milton at Fontbonne Academy. Volunteers need to commit to one, one and a half hour session every week for a period of 6 months to one year. Many of our volunteers continue with us through the summer and for several years. Volunteering at The Literacy Connection offers a rich experience for any volunteer at any time in life- whether a student, in between careers, during life changes, and retirement. We work with tutors and provide some training and guidance to help the adult student in need actualize his/her goals.

Mission Statement
The Literacy Connection is a vibrant and unique literacy program, sponsored by The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Boston. We are committed to teaching low-income adults to read, write, and communicate in English in order to have a better life for themselves and their families. In addition, we provide citizenship classes and one on one guidance through the naturalization process. Since 1987, the program has grown to serve immigrants and refugees from over 30 countries and has helped nearly 150 people become U.S. citizens.
Description
The Literacy Connection is part of The Sisters of St. Joseph Congregational Ministries.
We are ordinary women from all walks of life. Our special focus is to work for unity and reconciliation where there is brokenness, to help people become whole and holy, individually and together. In 2005 we articulated this mission with renewed hope for the future in the following statement:
Enflamed
with the compassion of God,
we Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston,
women of the Church, rooted in the Gospel,
together with our Associates,
are impelled by the active, inclusive love of God to:
deepen our relationship with God and the dear neighbor without distinction;
foster prophetic communion;
and journey into the future
with Sisters of St. Joseph and Associates
throughout the world
and with all God’s Creation.
We Sisters of St. Joseph are women receptive to the stirrings of the Holy Spirit of Love. Together with our associates we are called to live in right relationship with all creation. We are a community of women whose mission is to realize the prayer of Christ that all may be one. In community and prayerful contemplation we listen to this Spirit and move always toward profound love of God and love of neighbor without distinction.
