Communities In Schools of NOVA looking for talented young professionals to dedicate their time and talents as members of our Young Professionals Board. The YPC will support the work of CIS NOVA by providing valuable assistance to our development, student support, and outreach efforts. The Young Professionals Board will meet on a quarterly basis to discuss ways to support the work of CIS NOVA in Arlington and Alexandria schools.

Across the country, approximately 1 in 5 children under 18 live in poverty. These are disproportionately children of color who already struggle with issues of access and equity. Without community support, they are more at risk for missing school, dropping out and failing to earn a high school diploma. By helping our most vulnerable students stay in school and succeed in life, we are building stronger, healthier and more economically stable communities where every person is capable of reaching his or her greatest potential.

Working directly in 2,300 schools in 25 states and the District of Columbia, Communities In Schools builds relationships that empower students to stay in school and succeed in life. Our school-based staff partner with teachers to identify challenges students face in class or at home and coordinate with community partners to bring outside resources inside schools. From immediate needs like food or clothing to more complex ones like counseling or emotional support, we do whatever it takes to help students succeed.

If you are interested in joining our team, please complete this application by April 15th!

Mission Statement

The mission of Communities In Schools is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

Description

Communities In Schools of NOVA works to keep students in school so that they can learn, grow and prepare for college, career and life.

In order to accomplish this, Communities In Schools of NOVA believes every child needs and deserves these "Five Basics":

A one-on-one caring relationship with an adult
Many children do not have strong relationships with caring adults. We recruit and train volunteers to be mentors and tutors to young people in need and at risk. These volunteers become someone the children can trust, depend on and look up to.

A safe place to learn and grow
Our programs give kids an alternative to risky environments and activities.

A healthy start and a healthy future
Our site coordinators connect young people with a host of services, which might include health and dental care, eyeglasses and even weekly groceries if needed.

A marketable skill to use upon graduation
Our high school programs focus on helping at-risk students master basic analytical and social skills while developing attitudes and ethics necessary for success in the workplace.

A chance to give back to peers and community
Through community service, young people not only obtain valuable leadership skills, but also understand the give/get interconnection between themselves and the greater community.
