Volunteers will gain experience working with newly arrived refugee adults and school-aged children in an intensive in- home tutoring program. For 2-4 weeks, volunteers will work with clients to develop self-sufficiency skills through targeted English language acquisition and community exploration.
Essential Functions
- Teaches client specific English skills
- Clearly say their name, address, and telephone number in English or have this information written down and accessible
- Identify an emergency and dial 911
- Ask for an interpreter
- Adapt curriculum to meet individual client needs
- Navigate to at least one community recreation space (i.e. a park, library) in walking distance
- Utilize bus passes to show clients how to get to and from Catholic Charities and a grocery store or other local resources
Education and/or Experience
- Experience with teaching or instruction, a plus
- Experience with English as a Second language or non-native speakers (exchange student or studying abroad), a plus
- Patient and friendly personality
Frequency/ Commitment
- 1-2 hour sessions twice per week for 2-4 weeks
