Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to explore stories and empower their voices. Through our innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula, accomplished authors visit high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms to guide students in creating their own writing projects based on the theme of the author's book.

You need no experience or training to volunteer. As a classroom coach, you'll support and encourage students as they work on their projects.

This workshop needs your help in Mott Haven. To sign up, contact volunteer@behindthebook.org with the program code and time slot(s) you choose. We'll provide the address, directions, and other information when you're confirmed:

Program IC12DPP-C

Date: Wednesday, March 28th
Time: 2:50 - 3:50 PM (you can also join one or both of 2 earlier classes from 9:00 - 11:00 AM)
Volunteer Role: Writing Coach

About the workshop: Twelfth-graders read Dan-el Padilla Peralta's Undocumented: A Dominican Boy’s Odyssey from a Homeless Shelter to the Ivy League, a memoir of his journey from homelessness to the top of his Princeton class. Students examined themes of immigration, identity, the adaptation process, and overcoming challenges to write about how you can stake a claim to the American dream if people don’t think you belong here. Coaches will work with small groups as they polish their first drafts.
