Organization Overview:

Formed in 2011, Awaaz is a nonprofit organization, based in San Antonio, Texas, that strives to promote awareness of family violence issues, and self-reliance and empowerment of South Asian survivors of family violence through multi-lingual community outreach, confidential peer support and confidential referral services. We envision a community formed from healthy relationships, tolerance and a strong support system.

Position Overview:

The Executive Director is the key management leader of Awaaz, a 501c3 non-profit that serves South Asian families affected by family violence. The Executive Director will advance Awaaz’s mission, and is responsible for building and implementing the strategic plan for Awaaz, obtaining grants, managing finances, recruiting and managing volunteers, overseeing the administration and programs of the organization, and executing the mission and day to day management of Awaaz. Other key duties include fundraising, marketing, and community outreach. The position reports directly to the Board of Directors.


  • Serve as the face of the organization and raise organization’s visibility through public speaking, the development and implementation of programming, marketing, and advocacy initiatives
  • Write grants to enable funding of the Executive Director position
  • Effectively plan, implement and execute programs, grants, events and activities
  • Plan and lead development initiatives designed to increase donations from individuals, corporations, the government, and family foundations
  • Work with Board in order to fulfill the organization mission, including communicating with the Board all necessary information in a timely manner
  • Budget, keep track of finances, and file appropriate financial documents with regulatory agencies
  • Recruit and manage volunteers
  • Conduct outreach activities with South Asian community and mainstream stakeholders
  • Handle day to day functions of operating the organization, and building capacity for future growth


  • Solid, hands-on, budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting
  • Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation
  • Fundraising experience with foundations and corporate grants as well as the ability to identify, steward and solicit individual donors
  • Skills to collaborate with and motivate board members and other volunteers
  • Outstanding written and presentation skills
  • Broad professional and personal network with strong fundraising skills
  • Multi-cultural sensitivity
  • High level of compassion, authenticity and the ability to connect and empathize with survivors of trauma
  • Passion and experience working in or with nonprofit, human services and social work organizations
  • Experience with nonprofit fiscal management
