Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to explore stories and empower their voices. Through our innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula, accomplished authors visit high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms to guide students in creating their own writing projects based on the theme of the author's book.

You need no experience or training to volunteer. As a classroom coach, you'll support and encourage students as they work on their projects.

This workshop needs your help in Norwood, the Bronx. To sign up, contact volunteer@behindthebook.org with the program code. We'll provide the address, directions, and other information when you're confirmed:

Program DWC12GF-P

Date: Thursday, March 29th
Time: 8:15 - 9:00 AM
Volunteer Role: Writing Coach

About the workshop: These Advanced Placement (AP) 12th-graders read I Was Here by Gayle Forman , a taut, emotional, and ultimately redemptive novel about redefining the meaning of family, and finding a way to move forward in the face of loss. Students will write a character-based story in the voice of a teenager, based on either their own life or an invented character’s. Coaches will guide them as they edit their drafts.
