The Community Development Office is recruiting a Volunteer Case Manager to work with the Somerset County Rental Assistance Program. The goal of the program is to promote financial stability and does so by providing up to $300 per month for twelve months and then half of that amount for an additional three months. There is also a case management component and each client is required to meet once a month with a Case Manager, though more frequent contact is encouraged. The purpose of these sessions is to support financial management and literacy, to help clients become aware of and access resources, and to increase one’s chances to maintain permanent housing when program participation ends. Each client is required to complete and follow a monthly household budget that will be reviewed at the monthly case management session. Other goals for case management meetings are to review credit scores and debt repayment schedules, to provide feedback on each client’s resume and to give referrals to services for education and skills training programs as appropriate. The Case Manager also assists clients to secure other essential services including food and energy assistance, medical and vision care, and legal services that are provided in Somerset County.

The ideal Case Manager:

  • Is a good listener and is comfortable discussing confidential and sensitive personal issues
  • Can deliver negative messages and feedback with tact and diplomacy
  • Is warm, friendly and easy to approach and talk to
  • Relates well to all kinds of people; does not rush to judgement or make assumptions
  • Has and shows empathy for others, truly cares and is concerned, makes allowances for those in trouble
  • Knows how to manage a budget and maximize limited resources
  • Is encouraging and supportive in a way that motivates others to make changes that will lead to personal improvement
  • Can make a commitment to be available 6-8 hours per month; more if the volunteer is available
  • Is able to solicit, receive and process feedback related to the delivery of case management services
