Are you looking for an opportunity to help those less fortunate in San Diego? Host a book drive to collect books for Words Alive!

Words Alive is a local literacy advocacy non-profit founded on the belief that if you value reading and understand its fundamental connection to all aspects of your life, then you will be better equipped to thrive as a lifelong learner and productive member of your community. Our mission is to open opportunities for life success by inspiring a commitment to reading. Our goal is to change the lives of children and families in our community by fostering a love of reading and providing integrated literacy programming for students and families.

All the Words Alive programs are reliant on dedicated volunteers whose positive change is invaluable to our organization’s mission.

We are looking for volunteers who can host a one-time or monthly book drive in the community as a way to collect new and used books. We then redistribute these books in form of Lending Libraries to our school partners sites and organizations serving at-risk and/or low-income populations all over San Diego County.

We are most urgently in need of books for ages 0-5 but we will accept books for ages 0-18. Unfortunately, Words Alive does not have a way to repurpose the following: Text books, travel guides, cook books, reference books, magazines, religious books, overly worn/damaged books.

Goals and outcomes:

Volunteers will host a book drive with the purpose of collecting new and delicately used books. These books will be redistributed in communities around San Diego county to build the home libraries of at-risk and/or low-income populations.

Volunteers will be tasked with:

• Securing a venue for the book drive (school, church, community center etc.)
• Assisting with flyer development and distribution to promote the book drive
• Counting the number of books donated
• Arranging to have the books delivered to Words Alive

Hours and location:

Hours and location will vary based on the needs of the volunteer. Book drives usually last 2-6 weeks, start to finish, depending on the details.
