Seeking caring and compassionate Hospice Volunteers. Volunteers are an important part of the Hospice Team. We have a special project involving Butterfly Habitats with which we need your help. We have Habitats located within a variety of Assisted Living residence buildings around southeast Michigan.

"The Gardener"

Materials provided: Dirt, pots, plants, seeds

Start seeds in small pots, transplant plants into larger pots and allow to grow at your home until ready to be taken to the habitats - we like them to get pretty large for lots of food. If you have no room to store them, let us know and we will make arrangements to get them picked up.

Continue to remove and replant empty plants (that have been devoured by our very hungry caterpillars).

May/June - busy months getting plants ready for all habitats (there are currently 12 that each start with 5 plants). We replenish through the summer as needed transplanting every 2 weeks or so.

*Through mid-September.

"The Runner"

Weekly:

Picking up and delivering plants to the various habitats in your area, removing empty plants, placing full plants inside habitat, checking for caterpillars and eggs on plants outside habitats. Moving caterpillars inside habitat.

*Must be careful when removing plants from habitat to make sure to leave all caterpillars inside.

*End of May until mid-September.

"The Messenger"

Check habitats in your area on a weekly basis to make sure they are watered (but not overwatered, caterpillars can drown).

Make sure there are enough plants inside based on amount of caterpillars and sizes. 5 hungry caterpillars can quickly eat a plant that stands 1 foot from base in just one day! Check the outside plants for caterpillars and place them inside the habitat. Call or email your contact if low on plants or in need of attention.

"The Opener"

Setting up habitat, learning the process of how to raise them, assisting with residents in educating and starting for the season.

Beginning to mid May depending on weather.

"The Closer"

Assisting with cleaning out habitat at the end of the season.

End of Sept/beg of Oct depending on weather.

Can be as little or as much as you would like. Some communities have a "Butterfly Club" and you are welcomed to assist with that as well. Can be customized to what you are able and comfortable to do.

The Medical Team Hospice provides training to volunteers, recognition, and support. We do pay for and require a background check and TB test prior to assignment. Hours are flexible, according to your availability. Even if you have a few hours a week to volunteer, we could certainly use your help.

We would love to speak with you and find out more about how we can work together.

Come and join our team.
