Thank you for your interest in Traveling Stories! We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to providing literacy training to children in underserved communities. Our mission is to help kids fall in love with reading and learn money management skills by the 4th grade. Our goal is to empower kids with the tools they need to outsmart poverty in their own communities and become the best version of themselves.

We serve thousands of children each year through our "StoryTent" programs, which take place every week at various locations San Diego. Kids visit the StoryTent, pick out books that interest them, readoutloud with a volunteer and earn book bucks for every book read. With their bucks, kids can buy prizes.

Traveling Stories will be hosting a StoryTent at the UCSD Pi Beta Phi's 3rd annual philanthropy event, Arrowspike, on Sunday, May 6th in Pacific Beach. Arrowspike is a beach volleyball competition with the UCSD student body, athletics, Greek community, as well as local San Diegans. The day will consist of the volleyball tournament, food, music, an amazing raffle, and beach games throughout the day!

Volunteers for this event will read with children in the StoryTent, help children redeem their book bucks for prizes, and hand out information pamphlets to interested parties.

The event will be at 706 Pacific Beach Drive on May 6th, from 9:30am-4:30pm. This is a longer event, so we've split it into shifts that you can select if you cannot stay the entire day.

9:30am-1:00pm

1:00pm-4:30pm

*Please note:

Anyone is welcome to come volunteer with us for the first time without having to complete any paperwork! We want you to be able to check us out first and then fall in love with us! However, If you would like to become a regular volunteer, or you've already volunteered with us once before, we ask that you sign up as a volunteer here: Traveling Stories Volunteer Application
Once you fill that out, you'll receive an email asking you to undergo a background check. Those under 18 years of age are not required to undergo a background check. I can also waive this requirement if you send me a copy of a background check you've completed within the last year (such as through your employer). If you are a student, educator, senior, military, or a returning volunteer, you can send me a copy of the appropriate ID and I'll send you a link with Traveling Stories paying half the cost of your background check for a total of $9. Thank you in advance for understanding that background checks are necessary to keep the children we serve, our volunteers, and our staff safe. The safety of our loved ones is our highest priority. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns, we can't wait to read to kids with you!
