Introduction to this Volunteer Opportunity:
Not enough seniors in our community have a place they can turn to for help. When seniors don't have the support system they need, they can often spiral into situations that are hard to climb out of.

Together, we can help change that! With the support of volunteers, seniors can be introduced to different ways Council on Aging of Buncombe County can assist them our various programs and resources.

What Programs does Council on Aging of Buncombe County offer?

  • Information and Assistance through Resource Coordination - We offer comprehensive, person-centered information to ensure clients have their needs met.
  • Caregiver Support - CAPES = Caring for Aging People Education and Support.
  • Call-A-Ride - Provides volunteer transportation to seniors who can no longer drive themselves and who cannot access public transportation.
  • SHIIP-Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program - Do you need help with Medicare? We offer individual Medicare Counseling sessions in Buncombe and Henderson counties.
  • Affordable Care Act - We serve people of ALL AGES with unbiased, free, confidential Affordable Care Act navigation for choosing the best plan for you.
  • Benefits Enrollment Center - Assistance for low-income Medicare beneficiaries into the public benefits for which they are eligible, giving them access to medical care, prescription drugs, healthy food, home heating assistance, as well as other services.
  • Dining and Wellness - This program offers eligible adults the opportunity to enjoy free daily nutritious, hot lunches from Moose CafĂ© along with weekly fresh local produce in a fun, safe and social setting at four different locations.
  • Homebound Food Delivery - Monthly shelf stable food bags are delivered by volunteers to at-risk elders.
  • Elder Justice - Our team of professional human service staff provides care consultation, resources and social support for survivors and persons experiencing/reporting fraud, abuse, neglect, or exploitation.

How YOU can Help:
You can help Seniors learn about the free programs we offer. You can choose to help with outreach in the community so that our Seniors know that Council on Aging of Buncombe County is here to assist them.
Volunteer for events an outreach can mean many things, it could be setting up a table at events to hand out information, handing out information packets at various locations, making phone calls. You can make your outreach to the community how you want it to be! Let's spread the word about Council on Aging of Buncombe County!

We are very flexible and will work with your schedule.


The safety of you and our clients is our highest priority. Here's what's required for this role:

  • Clear criminal background check
  • Orientation and training with Council on Aging of Buncombe County
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • The ability to sensitively work with seniors, counseling them about issues that can be intimidating and confusing.
  • Someone willing to reach out to areas in the community to inform them how Council on Aging of Buncombe County can assist, specifically pertaining to food insecurities and our Benefits Enrollment Center.
  • Someone able to assist clients with benefits applications and maintain awareness of changes to income guidelines.

Description

The Council on Aging (COA) is a nonprofit organization that provides services to individuals age 60 and older. COA provides personal, caring support and assistance with the challenges of growing older. We provide referrals and help in learning the Medicare system, staying healthy and independent at home, and support for caregivers.
