Afterschool STEM Program Volunteer

Volunteers are needed for Grounded, The ROCK Center for Youth Development’s after school program. Grounded will offer ROCK Robotics, where students can familiarize themselves with robotic kits.

The ROCK is looking for diverse volunteers who might have experience in robotics. However, no robotics skills are mandatory--the most important skill is the ability to work with kids.

The program runs six weeks, Monday, April 16 through Wednesday, May 23. ROCK Robotics takes place at each of the ROCK’s three Midland Grounded sites: Monday’s are at The Underground, located downstairs at the Greater Midland Community Center; Tuesdays at Northeast Middle School; and Wednesdays at Jefferson Middle School. Volunteers will help at each site from 3-5 p.m.

Volunteers are required to take a background check, done through Midland Public Schools and The ROCK. Robotics and student training for volunteers will take place prior to the six week series. Details to follow.

For more about volunteering, contact Rick Gould at The ROCK, by email ( vista@therockc4yd.org) or phone (989) 835-2542.

Mission Statement

The mission of the ROCK Center for Youth Development is to provide every youth with unconditional love, support, respect, a safe environment, guidance and a model of healthy behavior.

Description

The ROCK Center for Youth Developmnet, established in 2001, serves youth in the 6 th through 12 th grades in the greater Midland area. With the support of individuals, businesses, foundations and other non-profits across the area, ROCK offers quality programs and activities in a safe environment where youth can learn tools and skills to be a productive caring member of our community.

However, some of the most important work that is done at The ROCK has less to do with programs and events and more to do with developing real and trusting relationships between teens and adults. Almost daily members of The ROCK staff come alongside students in crisis and offer support, direction, genuine concern and love. Lives are impacted as we deal with teen pregnancies, anger, depression, crumbling families, loss of hope, peer pressure and bad choices. The ROCK provides reliable adult role models to whom these teens can turn whether in crisis or struggling to with the challenges they face in their day-to-day lives.

The ROCK strives to ensure that youth in our community have the hope, the vision, the confidence and the tools they need to be good stewards of their own lives.
