Northstar Tutoring is a one-on-one tutoring and mentoring program for children in grades K-12 from low-income or homeless families. Tutoring sessions take place Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 6:30-8:00 at 1419 Columbia Rd. NW. During this hour and a half student-volunteer pairs work together to complete the students homework and/or study for upcoming tests. Individualized academic materials are provided to each student as well in case they do not have enough homework for the full 90 minutes.
We are always in need of volunteers who are willing to substitute and work with students whose tutors are absent for the evening. Substitutes will be paired with a student and help them with their homework and supplemental material, just as their regular tutor would. The benefit of substituting is that it is completely flexible with your schedule. Instead of making a weekly commitment, substitutes let us know which weeks they have a free Tuesday or Wednesday to work with a student.
Please also note that no previous tutoring experience necessary!
