Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to explore stories and empower their voices. Through our innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula, accomplished authors visit high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms to guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.

You need no experience or training to volunteer. As a classroom coach, you'll support and encourage students as they work on their projects.

This workshop needs your help at a school in East Harlem, NYC. To sign up, reply with the program code to volunteer@behindthebook.org. We'll supply the address, directions, and other information when you're confirmed:

Program 3751PB-V

Date: Friday, March 23rd
Time: 11:00 AM - 12:45 PM
Volunteer Role: Writing Coach

About the workshop: After reading Paulette Bogan’s Virgil & Owen, a story about finding your true nature and accepting the gift of friendship, first-graders reflected on their own experiences with issues in their school community. They worked on developing conflict-resolution skills to produce public service announcement skits about what it means to be a good friend. Writing coaches will help them polish their work, which will be published in a book along with their illustrations.
