On Saturday, February 24th, 2018 John Muir National Historic Site will launch Stewardship Saturdays. Join the National Park Service (NPS) for the first of these free, Ranger-led land stewardship programs this Saturday at the Martinez, California site. The program begins at 9:00 a.m. at the Strentzel Creek meadow area of Mt. Wanda and will end around noon. This area recently came under NPS management and is currently only open to visitation with an NPS chaperone. The stewardship project will entail removing invasive plant species from the sensitive creek and surrounding meadow. All training and tools required for this project will be provided. DROP-INS ARE WELCOME! You do not need to pre-register for this event.

Stewardship Saturdays, conceived and run by the park’s Natural Resources Program, is a new series of hands-on community stewardship projects and educational activities that will typically be held on the fourth Saturday of each month at John Muir NHS. The first four Stewardship Saturday events will be on:

  • February 24, 2018 at 9:00 a.m.
  • March 24, 2018 at 9:00 a.m.
  • April 28, 2018 at 9:00 a.m.
  • May 19, 2018 at 9:00 a.m.

Please note that activities may include bending, kneeling, and walking on slopes and uneven terrain. In addition, the closest restrooms will be one mile away, at the John Muir NHS Visitor Center - there will not be restrooms at the project site. Projects are not suitable for children under the age of 12. Minors will need a volunteer service agreement signed by a parent/guardian, and those under the age of 15 must have a parent/guardian present throughout projects. Parking will be available at 5018 Alhambra Valley Road, Martinez, California 94553. For more information please call Sierra Mathias at (925) 228-8860 ext. 6429.

About John Muir National Historic Site - National Park Service

Mission Statement

The National Park Service preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the national park system for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. The Park Service cooperates with partners to extend the benefits of natural and cultural resource conservation and outdoor recreation throughout this country and the world.

Description

Often labeled as the "Father of the National Park Service," John Muir was many things: inventor, immigrant, botanist, glaciologist, writer, first president of the Sierra Club, fruit rancher and a devoted father. But it was John Muir's love of nature, along with his great influence in protecting it, that he is most known for today. Muir convinced President Teddy Roosevelt to set aside Yosemite (including Yosemite Valley), Sequoia, Grand Canyon and Mt. Rainier as National Parks.

To help tell his inspiring story National Park Service protects and manages the home, cultural landscapes and natural lands that represent John Muir's legacy, and where he last lived and accomplished many of his feats as a man of many skills.

To succesfully manage these resources, the park needs help and involvement from the public and local partners. There are many ways to get involved for people who are interested in hands-on activities, such as maintaining the cultural landscape, planting native plants, removing non-native plants, and assisting with visitor education and general services.

Please contact us if you are interested, or stay posted on our periodic announcements about opportunities.
