Action for Healthy Kids (AFHK) has started a new Auxiliary Board and is looking for a diverse group of professionals who are interested in making a difference in the local communities in Chicago. This new board is dedicated to supporting and building awareness of the AFHK mission - all kids deserve to be healthy, active and ready to learn.
AFHK is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 2002 and is headquartered in Chicago. It works to mobilize school professionals, families and communities to take actions towards increasing healthy eating habits, physical activity and building healthier schools where kids thrive. Purpose of the Auxiliary Board:
- Raise awareness of AFHK programs locally (ex. Every Kid Healthy Week, Chicago Marathon sponsorship, etc.)
- Expand AFHK’s donor and volunteer base through fundraising and recruitment efforts
- Serve as advocates of AFHK that empower the community to take action in creating healthier schools
What we are looking for:
- Professional working in Chicago
- A passion or interest in health and wellness and/or education
- Comfortable with ambiguity and a start up feel (we are still building the foundation)
- Capacity to dedicate time to the board and/or be a consistent volunteer
- Prior experience with fundraising, recruitment, public relations, social media or foundations preferred
Expectations:
- Serve as an advocate of AFHK to help us raise awareness of our programs/events
- Attend a monthly board meeting every 3 rd Wednesday of the month (allowed to miss 2-3)
- $500 annual give or get fundraising commitment
- Commit to a one-year term of service
- Help recruit people from your network (and outside your network) to attend events
- Sign up for tasks requested from the board leadership (if they interest you)
- Volunteer your time and skills! For example, you could lead, coordinate and participate in one of our annual events that are volunteer and/or fundraising focused.

Founded in 2002 by 16th U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher, MD, PhD, Action for Healthy Kids (AFHK) is a nationwide nonprofit that mobilizes school professionals, parents, families and communities to take actions that lead to sound nutrition, physical activity, and healthier schools where kids can thrive. Its initiatives focus on promoting healthy living while fighting childhood obesity and undernourishment by helping kids across the country eat better, move more, and develop the lifelong habits necessary to promote health and learning. Through grant awards to schools and districts, proven programs, and access to a grassroots network of more than 140,000 volunteers and champions, AFHK fosters advancements in school programs, policies and practices that improve foods and meals served, nutrition education, and physical education and activity. Operating under a national staff, with the support of more than 75 organizational and philanthropic partners, as well as 32 active State Teams, AFHK’s vision is a world where every kid is healthy, active and ready to learn. Last year, AFHK programs and resources have benefited more than 17 million children in 32,000 schools across the country.
