Statistics show that less than 35% of fourth graders in Boston Public Schools can read proficiently (less than 55% in Revere Public Schools). Children who are not reading at grade level by fourth grade are four times more likely to drop out of school and have increased involvement with the criminal justice system. Be a part of our volunteer team to combat this problem!

Generations Incorporated is looking for older adult volunteers (age 50+) to work in elementary school classrooms and one-on-one with students (K-3rd grade) in Boston and Revere. Help students be successful in school and throughout their lives by helping them improve their reading skills. No previous experience teaching is required, just a desire to help children become better readers!

Our volunteers attend a 6-hour initial training, are supported by a Site Team Leader at their service location, and are provided monthly professional development meetings for ongoing support. Volunteers are placed in a classroom or work one-on-one with a student twice per week. Volunteers develop a relationship with their students, see meaningful improvement in reading skills, and serve as a mentor.

Volunteers commit to serving in a school or afterschool program for five hours per week (two days for 2.5 hours each day) for the full school year.

Opportunities are available during the school day (primarily mornings between 9:00 am - 11:30 am) as well as in the afternoons at afterschool locations.

About Literations

Location:

One Federal Street, 5th Floor, Boston, MA 02110, US

Mission Statement

Literations drives educational equity through experienced community volunteers empowering young readers for lifelong learning.

Description

Literations is a nonprofit literacy organization dedicated to improving the reading proficiency of young students in 1st through 4th grade in under-resourced communities using a proven literacy model and trained volunteer coaches.

Nearly 70% of students who live in our communities are not reading at grade level when they enter the fourth grade. Literations is squarely positioned to address the urgent need for individualized support given the growing opportunity gaps for young students.

Our Unique Model

  • Our exclusive focus on students in 1st-4th grade results from the growing body of research that indicates this is the juncture that has the most impact on a child’s lifelong success.
  • Providing more time to practice reading skills with trained volunteer coaches using a structured curriculum provides students with the skills and confidence to succeed.
Thanks to our 1:1 coaching model, Literations students end the school year reading 1.5 grade levels higher than they began.
