"Carly"
One of our public pianos at the Woodruff Arts Center

We visit all of our public pianos but we can't be there as much as we'd like. Piano Stewards are volunteers who visit a designated piano to perform a few basic tasks and to give us a heads up if there's something that about the piano that needs attention. This is what you'll need to do:

  • Tap the Keys
The more a piano is played, the longer it will continue to be playable (especially outdoor pianos). Rapidly tap every key several times (especially the less frequently played keys at the ends). The more often you do it, the less stiff the keys will get and the better the piano will sound between tunings. The more frequently this can be done, the better!

  • Wipe the Piano
Wipe the dust and dirt off the keys and the cabinet. If you think cleaner would be helpful, choose a mild cleaner without ammonia, and then spray the cloth rather than spraying the piano.
  • Close the Fallboard (for outdoor pianos)
If you're at the piano and there's current or pending inclement or blustery weather, close the fallboard (keyboard cover). It goes a long way toward keeping moisture and dirt out of the piano and from between the keys. Whenever possible, if a storm is coming, go to the piano and close the fallboard.
  • If You See Something, Say Something
We visit our pianos periodically, but if you see something that needs our attention sooner rather than later, reach out and let us know.

To sign up, click on the orange button on our volunteer page and fill out the brief form. Here's a link:

After you've visited a piano, please let us know. There's an orange PIANO STEWARD CHECKIN button on our home page at www.PlayMeAgainPianos.org. Even if there's nothing wrong to report, we'd really appreciate a quick checkin. That helps us spread our resources to make sure all the pianos are getting checked.

We would love for YOU to be a Piano Steward. There are two pianos at the Woodruff Arts Center. The piano named "Liam" is to the right of the main entrance in Callaway Plaza, near the door by the Symphony Store. The piano named "Carly" is in the breezeway just outside the door by the box office.
