LegalHealth Unit:

NYLAG is a not-for-profit law office that provides free civil legal services for low-income New Yorkers. LegalHealth partners with medical professionals in 26 hospitals in New York City to address the non-medical needs of low-income people with serious health problems. LegalHealth complements health care with legal care - providing free legal services in medical facilities and training healthcare professionals to understand the legal issues their patients may encounter.

Position Description:

The Volunteer Attorney will assist staff attorneys in drafting wills, performing direct client intakes of patients referred by LegalHealth partner hospitals, advocating with government agencies to secure benefits and services, such as Medicaid, Social Security, food stamps, and public assistance. Assist with legal writing, preparation of documents, research and administrative tasks as necessary.

Qualifications:

• Passion for our mission to help low-income New Yorkers

• Applicant must be an admitted NY attorney in good standing

• Bilingual capability in Spanish preferred

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Sensitivity to different backgrounds, cultures, and personal situations
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

Commitment:

• at least one day per week
• 2-3 months or longer
