Community Health Day

The Garces Foundation is seeking a grant writer.

The Foundation’s ultimate goal is simple: to provide the immigrant community with the health and educational resources they need to live healthy and prosperous lives. We provide free, comprehensive health care assessments quarterly to any immigrant and on-going, free or reduced-cost, dental care. Participants are then folded into the health care system via established clinics serving the immigrant community. Patients seeking dental care are treated free of charge, for as long as needed, at the Garces Dental Group, a Philadelphia-based private dental practice.

In addition to providing these services, the Garces Foundation provides English language classes and workforce skills geared toward immigrants working in the culinary industry. Our classes allow recent immigrants to advance through their careers - many start out in back of house, lower wage positions and, thanks to our training, advance to higher earning positions with a range of career options.

The immigrant community we support is made up of hard working people who usually work two jobs. They make time for our classes and health care clinics. They pay taxes. They are a critical force in the economic revitalization of Philadelphia - yet they are not covered by our nation's social safety net.

Looking ahead, the Garces Foundation is planning to expand our services to also provide mental health care services - our vision is for these services to be free of charge, and available to any immigrant who seeks them, similar to our coverage of dental care.

The Garces Foundation is uniquely positioned to provide for the new Spanish-speaking immigrants in South Philadelphia. We are the only organization serving the community in the area. Similar organizations, such as Congresso and NSE are outside our region, serving more established immigrant communities in Northern Philadelphia. We are also the only organization providing comprehensive health, dental and culinary-career focused educational services - acting as a single resource, safety net, and springboard to a community desperately in need.

By providing these key services, the Garces Foundation provides a vital lifeline and improves the lives and career prospects of Philadelphia’s immigrant community.

Mission Statement

The Garces Foundation is a community-based, non-profit organization committed to providing Philadelphia’s immigrant population the healthcare, education, and support to empower them to fulfill their potential as citizens and enjoy the highest possible quality of life.

Description

The Garces Foundation is committed to helping South Philadelphia’s underserved immigrant community get access to healthcare and educational services. Considerable health disparities between White populations and Latino immigrants persist, especially those with limited English proficiency. Philadelphia’s Spanish-speaking immigrants face significant linguistic and cultural barriers to obtaining health insurance and accessing healthcare. Prophylactic dental care is a particular problem, one whose solution has important medical upsides because easily treatable minor conditions can, left untreated, lead to serious health problems including heart disease and stroke. By building programs that deliver health, dental, and educational services to this vulnerable population, the Foundation works to improve these lives and empower them to reach their potential.
