Broadcom Presents Design_Code_Build (DCB) is an opportunity for students to discover, create, and learn at the Computer History Museum! Middle school-aged students have fun exploring the past, present, and future of computer programming through hands-on activities, while creatively solving problems and making new friends. DCB encourages students to challenge themselves, become inspired, and see science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) as an exciting adventure that they can participate in. The day includes an innovative keynote "rock star" speaker from the tech industry who shares their knowledge, enthusiasm, and passion with the participants.
In addition to a rock star speaker, individuals from the tech industry are encouraged to get involved and become a positive influence for students at the events. DCB volunteers act as role models and mentors to the participants throughout the day, helping to drive enthusiasm and curiosity. Incorporation of tech professionals as volunteers also provides students with the opportunity to meet and learn from real people in the tech industry. Technical skills are not necessary to be a volunteer at DCB. However, a lot of energy and enthusiasm is required!
The volunteer shift will be from 8:45am to 4:00pm. On the morning of the event, volunteers should arrive at 8:45am to check-in; orientation and training will begin at 9:00am. A light breakfast (bagels, coffee, etc.) will be provided for all staff and volunteers. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing and shoes - a Design_Code_Build t-shirt will be provided to each volunteer upon check-in. By 9:30am, students will begin arriving for the event, and volunteers are encouraged to interact with students, welcome them to Design_Code_Build, and get to know them. Because it is a large event that requires staff and volunteers constantly working with students, there are no designated breaks, but lunch and snacks are provided, and volunteers are encouraged to eat lunch with the students and engage in conversation. We do ask that volunteers work the entire 8-hour shift, as it is really important for the students to interact and learn with our amazing volunteers, and build a strong rapport throughout the day!
