Families on a tight budget report that the cost of healthy groceries is their biggest barrier to making healthy meals at home. Food skills, like smart shopping, can help overcome that barrier. Cooking Matters at the Store is a free program that empowers families to stretch their food budgets so their children get healthy meals at home.

We are looking for volunteers to help with a Cooking Matters at the Store event day at the Walmart Supercenter at 17850 Garland Groh Blvd., Hagerstown, MD. The event is on Saturday, February 17, 2018.

Adults will visit four stations (produce, grains, dairy, and protein) to learn how to make healthier choices while on a tight budget. After visiting all four stations, participants receive a Cooking Matters informational booklet with healthy recipes and a $10 gift card to Walmart. We anticipate reaching 150 families during the event!

We rely on volunteers to help make these event days a success, and there are a variety of volunteer positions available for all levels of interest and expertise.

Volunteers can sign up for the following shifts:

  • 10:00 AM-12:00 PM Half-day
  • 12:00-2:00 PM Half-day
  • 10:00- AM-2:00 PM Full day

Snacks and water will be provided. A small stipend may be available. See our volunteer position descriptions below to find a role the works for you.

Event Day Volunteer Positions:

Nutrition Educators: Located at each station, nutrition educators provide food samples and deliver talking points that help participants recognize the healthful options in that food group while saving money.

Registration Table Volunteers: Table staff will help participants complete paperwork and provide an overview of how the tour works. They also provide participants with incentives after visiting each station.

Greeters: Greeters meet participants outside the store and encourage them to take part in the tour, informing them of them of the benefits and incentives. They will also distribute flyers and direct shoppers toward the registration table.

Support Volunteers: Provides overall support for the staff team, including help with replenishing tastings and materials, helping with set-up and clean-up and providing breaks to other staff.

No experience is required. Volunteers will receive the information and materials necessary to have a successful experience. Our volunteers are a vital part of helping families put the healthy food they deserve on the table.
