Eastside Village PDX is a membership based organization committed to supporting seniors who want to age-in-place. Our members live independently but several no longer drive so need rides to medical appointments or the grocery store. Some need rides to social engagements, which prevents isolation. In fact, we have one member who, in her 90s, no longer drives but continues to volunteer at a shelter for women so we could use a driver to help her get there. In short, we need volunteer drivers to help members stay engaged and healthy while maintaining their independence.
Scheduling is completely up to the volunteer. You'll get an email with a special request that includes the time and destination. All you need to do is reply and let us know if you're available or not, which means you have control of where, when and how frequently you drive. We partner with Ride Connection who provides excellent training for our drivers. You'll need your own car and insurance and the position requires us to do a background check.
I am a volunteer driver and have really enjoyed my time in the car with our senior members. We always have great conversations and our members are all so grateful for the service we provide. I have even made some new friends!

Mission Statement
Villages NW is reshaping the experience of aging. We keep older adults connected and active, contributing members of the community. With 11 neighborhood-based virtual villages, seniors make new friends close to home, participate in online coffees, happy hours and other social activities. We also help each other out when needed with neighbor-to-neighbor home maintenance, yard work and errands.
Description
The Village Movement is a holistic approach to vibrant, healthy aging. It combines a meaningful purpose in life; finding new friends as we begin to lose spouses and see less of long-time friends and neighbors; familiar surroundings; and preserving financial assets against the day when a higher level of care might be necessary. In addition to these quality of life issues, Villages fill gaps in support and services, which enable older adults to live independently.
We have 11 neighborhood-based villages with 600 members and a comparable number of volunteers in the Greater Portland Metro area. About half of our volunteers are also members.
Villagers are members rather than clients. About half volunteer in some way whether it is driving someone to the doctor, doing a little yard work, checking in with a member who is mostly homebound, working on activities or doing Village support.
