Students participate in stations related to our book of the week after we read it together. The different activities at the stations all focus on literacy and incorporate themes from the book we read.

Our literacy tutor volunteers work 1-on-1 or in small groups with students K-2. This service opportunity is great for those looking to build or share their pedagogical experience, especially with elementary learners. No previous classroom experience is necessary, but those with backgrounds in literacy or enrichment topics are preferred!

Project Healthy Community’s After School Program at Schulze Academy includes a supper for the kids, a curriculum focused on building students’ literacy skills, and enrichment activities. The program meets Mon, Tues, Thurs from 3:45pm-6pm and Wed 2:45pm to 5pm. Wednesdays are an early release day, hence the different timeframe. We are also focusing more on literacy Wednesdays than the other days of the week.

We are looking for volunteers to commit to coming one day a week. Consistency among volunteers has been shown to improve students’ learning and allows volunteers to better connect with the children. Message us to sign up to volunteer.

Now more than ever, it is important to identify struggling readers and aid them in developing their skills. With the enactment of the 3rd grade reading law, starting in 2019, students not reading at grade level will be retained in the 3rd grade. Considering that 2019’s 3rd graders are today’s 1st graders, PHC has chosen to adapt our program from K-5 to K-2. We are thrilled by the support and encouragement we receive from DPSCD in achieving our mission of promoting the wellbeing of all people.

Project Healthy Community is a non-profit social enterprise that prides itself on multi-cultural, interfaith, inter-community partnerships. Our mission is to promote the well-being of persons of all ages within communities in-need in Southeast Michigan with an emphasis on nutrition and education for children.
