This is an outdoor event; volunteers will be running the standing and running long jump events, guiding athletes, keeping score, and cheering them on. Volunteers will also be assisting with junior athletes in Stars of the Future events that participate in things like soccer ball handling and other "field day" type activities. Volunteers will also work with the awards team in escorting athletes to the awards area and giving out awards and cheering on athletes as they go for the gold.

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities [mental retardation], giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitnesss, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in as sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Description

Special Olympics Oklahoma develops and administers a year-round training and competition program throughout the state offering approximately 100 competition events each year. Competition is offered in 15 sports for athletes 8 years of age and above.

Special Olympics is a volunteer driven organization. Volunteers come from corporations, businesses, civic organizations, schools, churches, and individuals. The majority of volunteers assist in the running of our competitions; from organizing athletes, to timing & measuring, to presenting awards.

From time to time volunteers are needed at Special / Fundraising events.
