There are several benefits to having potential Board members complete an application to join the Board, including:

  1. It requires the potential member to carefully think about his or her decision to join the Board, when completing the application.
  2. It can collects important information that otherwise might be forgotten to be collected, for example, why they want to join the Board, other affiliations they have that might cause a conflict of interest, what skills they have to bring to the Board, and what they would like to get out of joining the Board.
  3. It also makes the potential member affirm their agreement to certain terms of membership, for example, the number of Board meetings to attend over a certain time period, and adherence to a certain code of conduct.

The new board member application asks candidates 20 questions, ranging from why they want to be a nonprofit member, to elaborate on the CID's strengths and identify areas for improvement. Sample questions include: "How does the board’s role differ from that of the executive director?"; "What should be the relationship between the board members and the administration in handling concerns?" and "Briefly describe your commitment to public service and our community advocacy, among others." Before submitting, applicants will be asked to sign their names and certify that all the information provided is accurate.

To be eligible to apply for appointment to the Cognitive Institute of Dallas Board, an individual must be at least 18 years old; be a resident of Texas; be a registered voter in the state of Texas, and not be disqualified from holding civil office by the constitution or any state law.
