"If you want to feel good and be inspired and empowered, then judge tournaments at the BDL. It's a great opportunity to help out your community because these students are actually making a difference." - Lorena, BDL Alumna and Volunteer
Join our team for our first high school debate tournament of the season! No experience is necessary. A self-paced training (required) is available for all first-time and returning volunteers.
As a volunteer judge, you will listen to debaters, take notes, offer encouragement and feedback, and determine a winner in each round. You'll judge three rounds, ensuring that 8 student have the opportunity to debate. Debate tournaments happen virtually: you'll receive instructions and links when you sign up.

To measurably improve students’ academic achievement and their expectations of themselves by engaging as many BPS high school and middle school students as possible through academic debate
The Boston Debate League (BDL) is a non-profit organization that works in partnership with the Boston Public Schools (BPS) to support academic debate teams in local high schools and train BPS teachers to use debate as a regular part of their classroom practice. The BDL is now beginning a massive expansion, evolving from an organization that changes the lives of a few individual students to one that transforms the academic culture of entire schools and the district itself. Our focus over the next three years is to go deep in existing member schools, building large debate teams and supporting hundreds of teachers as they use debate to transform the academic atmosphere and expectations in their classrooms.
This is a Virtual Opportunity, with no fixed address.
