Do you love to read? Would you like to help children learn to love reading too? Book Buddies gives adult volunteers the opportunity to read with Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade children on a weekly basis during the school day. Although lots of retired teachers volunteer for Book Buddies, you don’t need to be a teacher to volunteer. You just need to love reading and working with kids.
More than 160 volunteers are currently reading one-on-one with 200 children and helping in 30 classrooms in 14 schools across Dutchess and Orange Counties. The volunteers are helping children improve their reading skills and confidence. Principals and teachers have enthusiastically asked our volunteers to return every year and have spread the word to other schools. We are currently looking to expand the program to schools in eastern Dutchess including Amenia and Wingdale.
