  • 90 people are interested

Inspiring Connections Outdoors (ICO) empowers communities to connect and reconnect people to the outdoors who may not otherwise have the opportunity to do so. ICO works alongside communities to support recreation, social interactions, physical movement and mental health in the outdoors.

Started in the San Francisco Bay Chapter in 1971 and instituted as a national program in 1976, the ICO program today has 52 groups that conduct more than 900 outings for approximately 12,000 youth each year. From day hikes, to multi-day service and rafting trips, ICO offers a range of activities to support communities in exploring, enjoying and connecting in nature in places close to their homes and in distant places

Mission Statement

Sierra Club's Inspiring Connections Outdoors (ICO) provides opportunities for people with limited access to the outdoors - especially youth - to safely explore, enjoy, and protect the natural world.

Description

The Sierra Club envisions a just, equitable, and sustainable future where all people benefit from a healthy thriving planet and a direct connection to nature. Our outings program Inspiring Connections Outdoors (ICO) engages youth partners (community based organizations, schools, and other youth groups) in co-creating affirming experiences that range from hiking, canoeing, camping, rock climbing, stewardship work, & backpacking.
ICO volunteer run groups contribute to the creation of more equitable outdoor environments nationwide by offering youth with limited access to the outdoors to outings that promote wellness, connection, and leadership. Active groups nationwide offer training to volunteers.
