Become a Volunteer at Brown County Historical Society and Hazelwood Historic House!

Planning is underway for 2019! Take the opportunity to support Brown County Historical Society to the next level by donating your time and talents to Hazelwood Historic House! Whatever your interest, we have a volunteer opportunity that fits your passions. We are always in need of people who would like to learn more about Hazelwood and the Martin family to be docents.

BCHS has lots of other needs for volunteers throughout the year!

Volunteer Jobs/Expectations:

  • Guide
    1. Work with Supervisor and seasoned guides to learn the history of Hazelwood to tell its compelling story to visitors.
    2. Serve as an Admissions person when visitors come for a tour.
    3. Needs to be available to guide AT LEAST 2 week and 2 weekend days a month from June-August (We are open to the public from Thursday-Sunday Noon-5PM).
    4. Help with other summer programming days-Summer School Trips, Group Tours, etc.
    5. Be available in the "off" season for group tours, Girl Scout troops, school tours, etc.
    6. Be available to work as a Cemetery Walk Guide or Admissions person for AT LEAST one of the three cemetery locations.
  • Special Events
    1. Be available to assist with set-up, breakdown, hauling tables, chairs, decorating, etc. for special events at Hazelwood or off-site.
    2. Help with Admissions or other stations assigned by supervisor and agreed by the volunteer. (serving tea, doing dishes, managing food, passing out information, etc.)
    3. If interested, may be able to assist with planning & executing events & programs
    4. Ability to consider donating food to a program
    5. Current types of events:
      1. Teas
        • Serve, Food Prep, Set up, Break down
      2. Cemetery Walks
        • Guide, Work the Admissions Desk, Serve Cookies and Juice afterwards
  • Faeries & Wizards Festival
    • Assist with crafts, set up, break down, Food Prep, etc.
  • Road Rally
    • Volunteer to be at a "station" on the Rally Route.
  • Halloween, Christmas, Walking Tours, etc.
    • Guide, Admissions, Food Prep, Set up, Break down, etc.
  • Workshops
  • Baking:
    • Making sweet treats for our special events! We are in need of cookies and other desserts for our Teas, Cemetery Walks, Haunted Hazelwood, Christmas and other events throughout the year.
  • Girl Scout/School Programs:
    • We have several school and Girl Scout programs throughout the year. Want to lead school groups through the cemetery or docent at Hazelwood, we always can use a hand!
  • Program/Event Ideas
    1. We always welcome different ideas that will expose Hazelwood and BCHS to the community. Ideas need to be feasible to the house, while also protecting the collections. (Ideas are not required to just be at Hazelwood, but programs we can do within the community as well)
  • Mailings/House Maintenance
    1. Assist with Bulk Mailings (Stuffing letters, closing newsletters, applying labels)
    2. Help keep Hazelwood a functional space by helping clean (sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, move furniture, etc.)
  • Yard Work
    1. Hazelwood has a large lot and some routine up keep.
      1. Gardening, raking, weeding, watering, picking up sticks & walnuts, etc.
        • Help with curb appeal

To preserve, present, and share the heritage of Brown County history through preservation activities, exhibitions, educational programs, and events.

Description

The Brown County Historical Society was officially founded as the Green Bay Historical Society on October 21, 1899 by a dedicated group of local historians. Throughout its long history, BCHS members have been active in preserving historic buildings, conducting research, providing information to the public, and stimulating interest in the complex multi-cultural heritage of the area.

Today the Society is as vital as ever. Its projects include advocacy for historical preservation, educational outreach, publications, operation of a historic house museum, and as a historical resource to the community.

The Brown County Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization funded primarily through membership dues and donations from individuals, businesses and foundations. We receive no governmental support.
