ORGANIZATION: The Arc Minnesota & Arc's Value Village

The Arc's Somali Speaking Outreach intern is a stipend eligible position for the spring 2020 semester and includes a $1000 stipend payable in May or the utilization of work study if eligible. This position assists with The Arc’s outreach and advocacy efforts with the Somali speaking community. This position provides administrative and logistical support to the team and assists with evaluations, protocol adjustments, expansion efforts and with other duties as needed. Work is conducted in collaboration and under supervision of the Program Team, which includes attending monthly team meetings for updates, brainstorming, support and planning. Specific duties include:

  • Make reminder calls to families or support families who make calls to those who attend monthly support group meetings
  • Assist staff in expanding Arc programs and services to the Somali speaking community; i.e. IEP development, health care access, housing access, accessing county services/waivers, etc.
  • Conduct evaluations of Arc advocacy efforts with the Somali community to ensure needs are met
  • Assist staff in identifying and recruiting Somali speaking volunteers and resources
  • Assist with Somali speaking networking groups and initiatives, community meetings and events
  • Identify items to be posted on The Arc’s Facebook page and other social media modalities
  • Participate in the annual evaluation of The Arc information, programs and services
  • Participate in other The Arc activities, interests, or initiatives as deemed appropriate
  • Assist with planning family fun events as requested to include families who speak Somali
  • Provide support to families in leadership development opportunities
  • Assist with internal and external training needs, communication and process refinement
  • Research and establish a baseline on the percentage of Somali-speaking families that access needed services vs. those that do not; identify barriers for those that do not
  • Research and compile a list of organizations that support the needs of the Somali community who have a loved one with a disability; begin collaboration efforts
  • Other duties as needed

This position is a 10-14 hours per week commitment and is available for the spring 2020 semester. Most work completed Monday-Friday between 8:30-5:00pm. An exit interview will also be conducted to gauge intern experience and to make recommendations for improvement.

The Arc Minnesota is a non-profit, grassroots advocacy organization serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. Intellectual and developmental disabilities include Down syndrome, autism, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy and related conditions. The Arc helps people address issues such as early intervention, education, transition to adulthood, employment, housing, health care, guardianship, transportation, supports available to families/caregivers and on policy issues at local, state and national levels.
