About GREEN GUERILLAS INC

Location:

232 E 11TH ST, NEW YORK, NY 10003, US

Mission Statement

For the past 43 years Green Guerillas has helped people turn vacant New York City lots into community gardens. The organization utilizes a mix of education, organizing, and advocacy to help more than 150 community garden groups obtain the plants, materials, people, and funds they need to strengthen vibrant green spaces, engage people, feed people, and connect people of all ages to the earth.

Description

The Bronx and Manhattan Land Trusts are groups of community gardens, for which the Green Guerillas provides support and technical assistance.

Both of these Land Trust are extraordinary assets that can be strengthened and built upon to ensure their essential stewardship and community-building activities continue for years to come - and ensure that land trust gardens are preserved as an important part of the fabric of New York City neighborhoods.

Both land trusts are led by active, passionate grassroots leaders who meet regularly to make sure that property management responsibilities are met and the needs of member community gardens are addressed. Land trust gardens are located in neighborhoods that have a shortage of safe, usable open space and desperately need places for people to grow food and celebrate their cultures. Created by grassroots groups, the land trusts gardens are 25 to 40 years old.
