Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to explore stories and empower their voices. Through our innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula, accomplished authors visit high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms to guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.

You need no experience or training to volunteer. As a classroom coach, you'll support and encourage students as they work on their projects.

This workshop needs your help in Mott Haven, Bronx, NYC. To volunteer, reply with the program code and time slot(s) you choose to volunteer@behindthebook.org. We'll supply the address, directions, and other information when you're confirmed:

Program BA6RWG-M

Date: Wednesday, March 7th
Times (choose one or both classes) :8:50 - 9:40 AM and/or 10:30 - 11:20 AM

About the workshop: Two sixth-grade classes read Rita Williams-Garcia’s One Crazy Summer, about three sisters who spend the summer of 1968 learning about the Black Panthers, Vietnam-and their mother, a poet and activist who left them years before. Students will also visit the Black Power exhibit at the New York Public Library’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Coaches will help them polish argumentative essays that address topics like immigration, segregation, bullying, and gun control, in response to the prompt What would I stand up for?
