Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre Presents Lakeside Stories

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre

Lakeside Stories is a one-day educational workshop & performance led by HDDT, painter and muralist, Kim West, and National Park Ranger, Tori Kuykendall. Participants will be on site at the Peter Strauss Ranch within the Santa Monica Mountain National Recreation Area to explore memory and storytelling through the lenses of art and ecology. From 12pm - 2pm participants will enjoy activities that include a printmaking workshop exploring monotype transfer drawing and ghost print techniques using found objects as mark-making utensils led by West and a local flora and fauna hike with Kuykendall.

At 2pm HDDT company dancers Himerria Wortham and Belle Jessen will perform a new work in the abandoned swimming pool where West’s installation-including her 115-foot mural Lake Enchanto lives. During the site-specific performance, the dancers will transform the work of West’s installation, while activating different parts of the site. Following HDDT’s performance Millennium Dance Complex Company will show a work created earlier that day with HDDT teaching artists and will incorporate the monotype transfer drawing and ghost print techniques from West’s workshop.

Following the performance is a HDDT Member reception inside Peter Strauss Ranch.

Mission Statement

Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre (HDDT) creates ephemeral contemporary art experiences in extraordinary places that boldly redefine the relationship between audience and art. Through cultivating innovative collaborations with artists, arts organizations and local communities, HDDT brings meaningful interdisciplinary dance to new audiences throughout Los Angeles and the world.

Description

Initially founded in 1985, HDD is a pioneer in producing interdisciplinary performances. The company develops and rehearses each multi-sensory experience in the site where the work is performed. HDD advances social equity in under-resourced communities by providing opportunities for audience members and students to interact with meaningful spaces, both public and private, that they may not otherwise have access to.

For over 35 years, HDD’s Artistic Director, Heidi Duckler, has created over 500 original works locally, nationally and internationally, including in many LA neighborhoods such as: Downtown LA (Arts District, Produce District and Fashion District), Boyle Heights, Koreatown, Hollywood, San Pedro and South LA. Duckler’s work has been internationally recognized in Hong Kong (Urban Arts Festival 2007), Russia (International East-West Arts Exchange 2010), Montreal (Transatlantique Quartier 2013), Germany (Tanzmesse, 2014 & 2018), Australia (Brisbane Festival 2014), Cuba (Ciudad en Movimiento 2016) and Chile (Puerto de Ideas 2018). This year HDD was awarded grants for upcoming programs including; LA County Department of Arts and Culture, City of LA Department of Cultural Affairs, Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, City of West Hollywood and Culver City, California Community Foundation, California Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. HDD produces over 25 original productions each year and thousands of diverse residents are served annually.
