Do you care about food waste? Hunger? The Environment? Help us.

AmpleHarvest.org is a one of a kind hunger / food waste nonprofit that has moved the problem into the cloud. More importantly, we're focused on the waste of locally grown excess garden produce - enough to feed 28M hungry Americans. (more at www.AmpleHarvest.org/study)

We’re trying to find someone who can create a spreadsheet listing of the harvest dates of different crops gardeners grow.... based on their USDA Ag (hardiness) Zone (more info at https://garden.org/nga/zipzone/). For example the dataset might look like

Crop USDA AG Zones 6 7 etc.
Raddish May 30-Sep 30 May 5-Oct 29
Tomato Jul 16-Sep 30 Jul 1-Oct 14
etc.

Every seed packet and gardening web site lists *planting* dates, and typically the number of days to harvest. We're looking for someone who can "translate" "plant these seeds June 1 through July 30, harvest 90 days" to "....harvest Sep 1 through Oct 30" and put it in the spreadsheet for each of the the Ag zones.

We're looking for this for all Ag zones and for as many types of garden produce as possible (we can supply the list). The goal is to help food pantries learn about what crops gardeners in their area will soon be harvesting and ultimately donating.

Note that this will not be an EXACT analysis as there are many variables that come into play (crop variety, types of soil, etc) but the hope is to give local food pantries a rough estimate of when they might expect donations of peppers.... and when they won't get any.

Can you help?

Mission Statement

AmpleHarvest.org diminishes the waste of food and therefore hunger in America by educating, encouraging and enabling gardeners to donate their excess harvest to the needy in their community instead of allowing it to rot in the garden.

Description

AmpleHarvest.org, founded by CNN Hero Gary Oppenheimer, is a nationwide non-profit that uses the Internet to diminish wasted food and hunger, improve nutrition and help the environment in America by educating, encouraging and empowering millions of backyard gardeners to easily find a local food pantry eager for their excess garden bounty.

Currently there are nearly 8,000 food pantries across all 50 states registered on AmpleHarvest.org, and more are joining every day.

AmpleHarvest.org has received support and backing from Google Inc., the White House and the USDA, the National Council of Churches, the National Gardening Association, Feeding America and its member food banks, Garden Writers of America as well as numerous faith organizations. It is available to food pantries (and similar feeding programs) and gardeners at no charge.
