The Autism Speaks Walk is the signature fundraising event of Autism Speaks. It is also the world’s largest fundraising event to support the diverse needs of the autism community. This grassroots movement is driven by volunteers and powered by love. Committee members and walkers generate funds that fuel innovative research and make connections to critical lifelong support and services.

Overview: The Walk Chair serves as the volunteer leader for the planning and execution of the Autism Speaks Walk. The Walk Chair works closely with Autism Speaks staff to ensure that plans for the event, as outlined in the Walk Manual, meet the Walk goal. The Walk Chair creates and implements a plan for an effective Walk Committee in order to achieve recruitment, fundraising, sponsorship, and mission goals. This is a one-year term.

Volunteer Attributes: Experienced fundraiser, passionate about the cause, detail-oriented, able to multi-task, good communication skills, excellent relationship building experience, comfortable reminding people of pending deadlines and asking for status updates.

Volunteer Objectives:

  • Understand the mission of Autism Speaks.
  • Understand the importance of fundraising for Autism Speaks.
  • Serve for two years as the Walk Chair.
  • Work with Autism Speaks staff to ensure the Walk is implemented as outlined in the Walk Manual.
  • Work with Autism Speaks staff to develop a plan of action to ensure event recruitment, fundraising, sponsorship, and mission goals are met.
  • Recruit, train, and manage a Volunteer Leadership Team consisting of the following positions: Walk Co-Chair, Sponsorship Chair, Fundraising Chair, Team Recruitment Chair, Team Retention Chair, Mission Experience Chair, Marketing & Outreach Chair, and Logistics Chair.
  • Encourage each committee chair to recruit, train, and manage their own subcommittee of volunteers to ensure there are enough volunteers to plan and execute the event.
  • Maintain regular communication with Autism Speaks staff and Volunteer Leadership Team, both through in-person meetings and written communication.
  • Assist with revenue generating activities including team recruitment and corporate partnerships
  • Serve as the volunteer spokesperson for the Walk.
  • Lead by example and actively fundraise for the Walk.
  • Mobilize personal network to participate in, volunteer for, and donate to the Walk.

Time Commitment: 9-12 months. Approximately 5-10 hours per month, as needed.

Overview: The Walk Co-Chair works hand in hand with the Walk Chair to coordinate all aspects of the event, as outlined in the Walk Manual. The goal of this position is to train next year’s Walk Chair by having them serve as this year’s Walk Co-Chair and learn on the job. This is a one-year term with the expectation of a two-year commitment.

Volunteer Attributes: Experienced fundraiser, passionate about the cause, detail-oriented, strong relationship building skills, able to multi-task, good communication skills, comfortable reminding people of pending deadlines and asking for status updates.

Volunteer Objectives:

  • Understand the mission of Autism Speaks and how the Walk fuels our mission.
  • Understand the importance of fundraising for Autism Speaks.
  • Serve for one year as the Walk Co-Chair.
  • Work with Autism Speaks staff to ensure the Walk is implemented as outlined in the Walk Manual.
  • Support the Walk Chair in all duties assigned to that role:
    • Work with Autism Speaks staff to develop a plan of action to ensure event recruitment, fundraising, sponsorship, and mission goals are met.
  • Recruit, train, and manage a Volunteer Leadership Team consisting of the following positions: Sponsorship Chair, Fundraising Chair, Team Recruitment Chair, Team Retention Chair, Mission Experience Chair, Marketing & Outreach Chair, and Logistics Chair.
    • Encourage each committee chair to recruit, train, and manage their own subcommittee of volunteers to ensure there are enough volunteers to plan and execute the event.
    • Maintain regular communication with Autism Speaks staff and Volunteer Leadership Team, both through in-person meetings and written communication.
    • Cultivate relationships with top fundraisers and Team Captains
  • Serve as the back-up volunteer spokesperson for the Walk.
  • Lead by example and actively fundraise for the Walk.

Time Commitment: 9-12 months. Approximately 5-10 hours per month, as needed.

Overview: The Corporate Development Chair oversees and coordinates all aspects of securing financial contributions and in-kind gifts for the Autism Speaks Walk. The Corporate Development Chair works closely with the Walk Chair and Autism Speaks staff to develop strategic partnerships, and helps the Team Recruitment Chair recruit and register corporate teams. This person must be committed to 20% of revenue being generated from sponsorship and in seeking new relationships and partnerships. This is a one-year term.

Volunteer Attributes: Experienced fundraiser, passionate about the cause, outgoing, strong relationship building experience, detail-oriented, good verbal and written communication skills, able to meet goals and deadlines.

Volunteer Objectives:

  • Understand the mission of Autism Speaks.
  • Understands the importance of fundraising for Autism Speaks.
  • Serve for one year as the Corporate Development Chair.
  • Work with Walk Chair and Autism Speaks staff to implement the Walk as outlined in the Walk Manual.
  • Act as the main point of contact for all corporate partner and sponsor activities.
  • Recruit, train, and manage a corporate development subcommittee from top team captains, friends, relatives, business leaders, and colleagues whose main responsibility is to assist with sponsor recruitment and retention efforts.
  • Facilitate corporate development subcommittee meetings as needed.
  • Brainstorm with committee to identify connections to local companies.
  • Generate a list of potential sponsors.
  • Secure event sponsors.
  • Report progress to Walk Chair weekly.
  • Work with Team Recruitment Chair to recruit and register corporate teams.
  • Secure any sponsor logos needed for the website and print materials.
  • Act as a sponsor liaison at the Walk to ensure that sponsors are satisfied with their Walk experience.
  • Ensure the fulfillment of sponsorship benefits, both pre-event and on-event.
  • Lead by example and actively fundraise for the Walk as well as recruit at least one sponsor from your company, organization, or circle of influence
  • Recruit and mentor a Corporate Development Chair successor.

Time Commitment: 9-12 months. Approximately 3-10 hours per month, as needed.
