Be Someone’s Hero .... Volunteer

We have all seen or experienced the joy and peace a dog brings to our lives. Through our programs we bring that same love to disadvantaged kids who need it the most. To effectively reach our mission we rely on amazing volunteers. These individuals give of their time and talent to help teens achieve success, find acceptance and build confidence through the use of a trained dog. In our reading programs volunteers help younger children read.

Furry Tales Program Volunteers: Furry Tale volunteers encourage reading skills by working with one of our program dogs and one elementary child as the child reads to our dog.

Reading with Patriot Volunteers: One volunteer assists staff in a class reading of one of our character building books. This program is an incentive reading program that includes one dog, one reader and one dog handler. Class participants are encouraged to continue their reading efforts which result in additional visits. Reading with Patriot is scheduled when requested.

No experience is required for any of our volunteer positions. Training will be provided.

If you are interested in becoming a Kids and Canines volunteer, please complete our online application or contact the office.

Thank you to all our volunteers. You are an integral part of our program.

Mission Statement

Empowering Kids - Changing Lives - One Dog at a Time

Description

Our core program is offered at the Dorothy Student Thomas Center, a school for Exceptional Student Education within the Hillsborough County Public School system. This school serves as an alternative for students with extreme emotional and behavior disorders or other disorders that prevent them from attending a main stream public school.

While the focus of our programs is to help at-risk youth, we continue to serve people in need...because once the dogs are trained, they are placed with individuals in the community who have certified needs. These dogs go on to empower others through their service as a therapy or companion dog for those suffering from PTSD or anxieties and children with autism...giving them the chance to regain their independence and resume a more productive life.
