Let me tell you a little bit about FeLT, our location and classes. FeLT is a 501(c)3 Organization that was started to counterbalance some of the less pleasant rhetoric surrounding immigration. We are run 100% by volunteers, at every level. Our office, as such, is at my home! However, saying that, we are incredibly proud of how our little organization is growing. At present, we run classes on Fridays and Saturdays in East Harlem. We partner with CS200, a community elementary school. Our students are predominately parents of the students. It has a high immigrant population, and the school were so delighted to have FeLT offer classes, that they have become our liaison point. Classes are from 9:30 - 11:30 and we currently have two levels. One class is literacy, which sounds much scarier than it is. Our students in this class are learning English for the very first time. We are concentrating on the Alphabet, and the absolute basics, in much the same way that children learn. They are a lot of fun and 90% arabic speaking. Then our other classes are Intermediate. On Fridays, it is often one student, but she is wonderful, loves to learn and actually a pleasure to teach. On Saturday, the class has around 5 students. In the next couple of months, we are looking to partner with a second school in Brooklyn. This is still in the works, but will probably replicate the same model. Our classes and teachers are amazing, however, we need help with the paperwork! FeLT is 100% volunteer staffed and run, and we need someone to shape our office procedures.
