Least Tern

Come help manage invasive plants in Mission Bay to protect the endangered CA Least Tern!

We will be working to remove invasive plants from one of the Tern's nesting sites on Fiesta Island. The meeting location will be on the northern edge of Fiesta Island in Mission Bay:

  • Once on Fiesta Island: at the fork, go right. Do not follow signs to the San Diego Youth Aquatic Center, just continue down the road. After about a quarter mile, park on the right hand side, off the road.
  • If you start to curve left and wrap around the island, you’ve gone too far. You’ll be looking for a chain link fence with a gate in it and signs that say "California least tern nesting area". Park along the road here.
  • If lost you can contact the restoration manager at (619) 694-6917.

Volunteers should wear long pants and sturdy shoes, and sun/rain protection as weather indicates. Work gloves will be provided, as well as all other tools and water. Bring a reusable water bottle for refills!

For questions/directions/RSVP: Call or email our Restoration Program Manager, Megan Flaherty, at flaherty@sandiegoaudubon.org or (858) 273-7800 x106.

Mission Statement

Together we defend our region's birds, unique biodiversity, and threatened habitats through advocacy, education, and restoration. We envision a region in which people and nature are interconnected and thriving, where diverse communities find common ground to prioritize and respond to the climate crisis and other urgent threats to birds and the natural world, and give shape to an enduring culture of conservation and sustainability.

Description

San Diego Audubon Society (SDAS) is a chapter of the National Audubon Society, an organization founded in 1905 to stop the slaughter of wild birds for their feathers. Originally founded in 1948, SDAS has served the region for over 70 years. We serve a diverse population, with community-based habitat restoration projects, environmental education programs, and recreational offerings in North County, Metro, East County, and South Bay communities. Programs include conservation, education, recreation, and sanctuary operations. SDAS leads the way in fostering knowledge and appreciation of the natural world and seeks to become an even more significant resource for our communities through our education, environmental recreation, and numerous conservation programs.
