Cold. Dark. Wet. Welcome to the streets of Pierce County at night.

These words take on new meaning when you've spent a night sleeping on the sidewalk, underneath I-5 or in the doorway of a business. Then you might add a few more adjectives. Bone-chilling. Embarrassing. Frightening.

Hundreds of men and women spend each night like this.

They focus on simple things - keeping their feet dry, finding the best doorway to sleep under or just trying to not think about their growling stomach.

When you live on the streets, the line between safety and danger is very thin. A pair of dry socks, a warm blanket and an encouraging conversation can really make a difference.

That is why the Mission will be hitting the streets every Tuesday night (6:30PM to 11:00PM) in the Search & Rescue Van, distributing these much needed items and facilitating healing relationships. They will also be offering the men and women they meet a ride back to the Mission for a safe night’s stay and a chance to get off the streets for good.

We are looking for long-term volunteers who can guarantee themselves available to a weekly or bi-weekly commitment.

If interested please respond to set up an interview time.

Location:

Mission Statement

To offer God’s help, hope, and healing to the most impoverished members of our community.

Description

Our Purpose

We help all people; including clients, volunteers, donors and staff, to become their best. We provide emergency services such as shelter and food to the homeless or hurting; offer self-sufficiency programs to help lift a person from poverty and break the chains of addictions; support prevention programs and share our Christian faith.

Our Values

People - We affirm that all people are made in the divine image of God and, therefore, should be treated with great dignity, deep compassion and absolute integrity. Our conduct toward people should confirm our Christian value of the divine worth of the individual.

Programs - Our programs reflect our values and are the end result of our efforts; they should be the best available to our clients. As our programs are viewed, so are we viewed. Our programs should give testimony to a high Christian standard of excellence.

Results - We believe that anything of value can be measured. We will measure the efficiency and effectiveness of our programs and services as to how they facilitate positive changes in the lives of those we serve.

Our History

The Tacoma Rescue Mission is proud to have served Tacoma and Pierce County since 1912. For over 100 years we have continued to serve in the name of Christ, while emphasizing the dignity of each person who enters our doors. We value the needs of our immediate community, and continually adapt to the changing needs of those who come to us for help.
