ORGANIZATION: SOUTHSIDE COMMUNITY LAND TRUST

  • 10 people are interested

Galego Community Farm is a 1.5 acre urban farm managed by Southside Community Land Trust (SCLT) on behalf of the Pawtucket Housing Authority. It hosts two market growers who grow healthy (chemical-free) crops that are sold to community members in Providence and Pawtucket by way of local farmers markets, CSA's and food-delivery systems. Within the farm there is a community garden that has 70 plots where residents can come and grow food for themselves and their families (last year we had 12 community gardeners!) and in the summer we offer learning and employment programs for local high schoolers.

As it currently stands, Galego Community Farm is a space that is still developing to properly meet the needs of it's current community gardeners, market growers, and those who will start cultivating their own parcels of land in the future. The main obstacles that we are currently facing are the presence of invasive weeds such as Japanese Knotweed and Mugwort (that became established during the time period where the property wasn't occupied) and the removal of debris and unused structures. Along with the previously listed tasks we are always looking to invite and host volunteers who are interested in participating in more farm-related activities such as prepping new beds, maintaining raised beds, and building terraces.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide access to land, education and other resources so people in Rhode Island can grow food in environmentally sustainable ways and create community systems where locally produced, affordable and healthy food is available.

Description

Southside Community Land Trust (SCLT) serves people in economically challenged urban neighborhoods where fresh produce is scare and who, as a result, are at risk for life threatening, diet-related, chronic diseases.
We help by:
- educating people about diet and nutrition, agriculture and the environment
- building and managing community gardens and farms
- providing low-cost agricultural resources and support to community gardeners
- training beginning farmers and enabling them to sell their produce to members of their communities.

SCLT owns or directly manages 21 community gardens in Providence, Pawtucket and Central Falls, and partners with schools, housing and community organizations to manager another 37. We also own or manage land used by 25 farmers to supply fresh fruits and vegetables to farmers markets, food businesses, restaurants and CSAs. Lastly, we operate three production farms in Providence and Pawtucket where we practice and demonstrate bio intensive, small scale agricultural production.
