Social Media Volunteer

Nonprofit Organization: Unlocking Silent Histories (USH)

Mission: Through an engaged critical and creative process, USH inspires Indigenous youth to create documentary films that capture and illuminate their cultures, languages, and customs. The voices of the youth lead the process, deciding which traditions and heritages to preserve and which methods are best to apply. Our goal is to collaboratively foster a learning and leadership model for younger generations as well as create business ideas that support their communities.

Position Summary:

We relaunched the brand + website and need an energetic and passionate Social Media & Communications Volunteer to work with our Executive Director, Guatemala Operations Manager, and Co-Chair of the Board on all things social! The Executive Director serves as the primary supervisor and assign tasks.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Capture and review social media calendar data (both quarterly and annually) with input for continuous improvement + best practice
  • Support and adjust quarterly and annual goals aligned to the social media plan and strategy
  • Engage daily on social media channels (Facebook + Instagram); appropriately respond on LinkedIn when needed
  • Teach USH chapter directors how to interact more with social media aligned to strategy, brand and best practices
  • Develop a plan to be active on email, mailchimp, and YouTube/Vimeo
  • Create and send e-newsletter every two months (MailChimp); prepare templates for all email communication
  • Develop email campaign concepts/plans for potential future use
  • Seek connections with relevant bloggers, groups, organizations, professionals, other like-minded users and websites who resonate with USH
  • Edit photos and videos


  • Passion for the volunteer role of making USH known worldwide
  • Outstanding communications, insights on tone and word use in writing, and the perceptions of varied audiences
  • Successful completion of communications, marketing, business, or brand courses or equivalent work experience
  • Proficiency with Adobe Products, social platforms, Google docs, WordPress, and Slack
  • Experience with Analytics (Google and Facebook)
  • Responsive to inquiries and requests with an agility in managing multiple tasks
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to stay calm under pressure
