The ASO is looking for volunteers to provide assistance in creating a smooth event experience for concert goers, musicians, and staff.

***MUST BE FULLY VACCINATED FROM COVID-19***

Timeframe: 5 hours on Saturdays / 4 hours Sundays

Number of people effected: Saturdays, 980 per concert - Sundays, 400 per concert

Impact: Help raise $300,000 towards the support of the orchestra and its community outreach efforts.

Dress code: Business Casual

Benefits: Free parking at both venues, access to view the performance (in between jobs), invitation to our annual Volunteer Appreciation Event, invitation to more intimate recitals throughout the year.

If interested and new to the ASO, please provide a phone number for a short phone interview. Proof of your COVID-19 vaccination will be required either via email or shown on the day of the event.

Available Opportunities


Event Set Up Crew Member

  • Assists with setting up tables, placing concert programs, green room set up, concessions items, and marketing display items
  • Some light lifting of tables and boxes
  • 2 hour time commitment before the concert begins

Box Office Assistant

  • In charge of will-call tickets. Distributes the correct pre-purchased ticket to the patron and verifies their seat.

Concessions Assistant

  • Creates an inviting display table for concessions and handles the purchasing of such before and during intermission of the concert. Will help consolidate left over items.

Usher

  • Assists patrons in finding their designated seat in a timely manner. (At Masonic Memorial, one usher provides elevator assistance, grouping patrons that need to go upstairs in a timely manner)

Ticket Validator

  • Collects and verifies that each patron has a ticket to enter the concert hall. May help usher as well.

Program Distributor

  • Distributes the concert program to incoming patrons at each entrance of the concert hall. May help usher as well.

Door Greeter

  • Welcomes and directs incoming patrons to their desired destination.

Reception (Saturdays Only)

  • Provides catering assistance in opening and serving enough wine, and making sure there are enough appetizers put out. Assists with storing leftover food and wine.

Event Take Down Crew Member

  • Assists in taking down tables, picking up programs, green room take down, concessions items, marketing display items, and reception items.
  • Some light lifting of tables and boxes
  • 2 hour time commitment

There are three tiers of volunteering you can choose from:

Long-Term Volunteers - Mainly stationary and more customer service based.

Must commit to at least two (2) Saturday night concerts OR two (2) Sunday afternoon concerts to remain active.

Jobs would include:

  • Box Office Assistant
  • Usher
  • Ticket Validator
  • Program Distributor
  • Concessions Manager

Short-Term Volunteers - Good option for students or military. These take a more active role in helping set up and take down. Need only commit to one concert, but are welcome to do more.

Jobs include:

  • Event Set Up Crew Member
  • Event Take Down Crew Member
  • Concessions Assistant
  • Door Greeter
  • Box Office Assistant
  • Ticket Validator
  • Program Distributor
  • Usher (if we’re short on ushers)

General Administration Volunteers - Good for retirees or students who would like to help our office during the day and are available during the week.

Jobs include:

Helping with mass mailings. Fold letters in a letter tri-fold, place stamps on the corners of envelopes, stuff envelopes with marketing materials, place address labels on the corners of envelopes, seal envelopes.
Chairs and tables are provided, as well as coffee

Description

Northern Virginia’s premiere fully professional orchestra, the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1954 and has established a reputation for thematic and inter-arts programming that features a mix of classical and contemporary music. The ASO’s move in 2002 to the critically-acclaimed Schlesinger Center established its reach and reputation as one of the region’s leading arts institutions. The Symphony has distinguished itself through powerful performances marked by poetry and vision.

The Alexandria Symphony Orchestra, which produces eight concerts, performs at the Alexandria Birthday Celebration and works with Alexandria public school students, has a $750,000 budget and earns income through ticket sales and program book advertising. It receives contributions from the Symphony Orchestra League of Alexandria (SOLA), Alexandria Commission for the Arts, the Virginia Commission for the Arts, the Paul M. Angell Foundation, the Theodore H. Barth Foundation, the Wells Fargo Foundation, the Alexandria Rotary Club, and other foundations, businesses, and individuals.
