Live-In Volunteers Wanted

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: LUKAS FOUNDATION

Project Description: The Lukas Community is a residential community for developmentally challenged adults. Volunteers spend approximately twelve months living and working with the adult residents who have a range of abilities. Some work is within the households (personal care, meal preparation, housekeeping, etc.) and some is outside in therapeutic gardens, dance, weaving, music, fitness, painting and crafts, and excursions for concerts, hiking, ice cream, etc. There are 16 residents, 10 staff members and 8 or 9 volunteers. Volunteers are welcome to come from outside of the US. Each volunteer has a private room, all meals provided, and monthly stipend for personal expenses.

Holiday and leisure time regulation: Volunteers have 3-4 weeks (approximately 20 work days) off depending upon the length of their service (12 months in most cases) and Lukas staffing needs. Vacation time is provided during our regularly scheduled winter and spring break periods when many residents are away. Volunteer vacations must be pre-approved by Lukas before making definite plans to be away.

Mission Statement

The Lukas Community was founded to answer the need for a place where adults with developmental disabilities could live full and productive lives, where each could develop abilities, while being supported in their disabilities, and where each was recognized as a unique human being with freedom, dignity and purpose, supported to realize his or her potential in all aspects of life. Their mission is to create an environment in which this process of becoming and unfolding would be respected, supported and encouraged.

Description

The Lukas Community is located in beautiful rural New Hampshire. Thirty people, some disabled and some not, share their lives, work and recreation in four extended-family households, spread over more than sixty acres of farmland.

Daily contact with nature and the arts, meaningful and productive work in the Lukas homes, gardens and craft studios, and the many cultural and recreational activities provided create a rich and full life. ▪
