1. Assignment Title

Volunteer(s) for Holidays & Special Events at the Uptown Division Veterans Affairs Medical Center

2. Purpose of Assignment

To provide volunteer(s) for the Recreation Therapy Department with guidelines and requirements for activities and events for inpatient Veterans for the following federal and non(federal) holidays:

M.L.K. New Year’s Day Not Federally Observed

Columbus Day July 4 th Valentine’s Day

Presidents Day Memorial Day St. Patrick’s Day

Labor Day Christmas Easter

Thanksgiving Day Veterans Day Mothers/ Father’s Day

3. Tasks

Activities or events do not have to take place on the calendar day of the Federal holiday (or the day that it’s observed). Volunteer(s) wanting to conduct any distributions (food or gift), visitations, or drop-ins are required to schedule and confirm activity prior to arrival at the VAMC through the Volunteer Service Department. Distributed items must be approved and checked by the Volunteer Service Department before dispersal. Volunteer(s) wanting to provide a community service are also required to explain the nature of their activity/visit and must be approved prior to scheduling their initial visit.

Suggested Activities (but not limited to): Group performances (dance, music, plays, demonstrations), picnic/cookouts, games/trivia, showcases/exhibition, spectator events, contest, Sport team/mascot visits, fitness exercise, fashion show, historical /informative

4. Time Commitment

Time of day and unit specifications can be discussed based on availability.

Volunteer(s) will be REQUIRED to schedule and confirm activity prior to arrival at the VAMC. The Volunteer Service Department may direct some request to the Recreation Therapy Department when appropriate.

5. Requirements

· Complete Voluntary Service documentation for Occasional Volunteer (when applicable).

· Use of all RT areas must be arranged and scheduled in advanced of activity/event. Approval from Recreation Therapy Department supervisor may be required.

· .Activities conducted on VA property and inpatient units must be in compliance with VA Medical Center policies for patient rights, ethics, and photo/video/audio regulations.

· Proper PPE & hand washing techniques must be utilized.

· Compliance with VA Medical Center policies for behavior and conduct while on federal property are non-negotiable.

· Volunteer(s) can only provide activity/event as granted by prior approval. Changes and restructuring of such, require notice and approval.

· Expectations and orientation will be explained.

· Assignment specific training

10.Working Conditions

Where/what’s provided:

· Use of all RT areas must be arranged and scheduled in advanced of activity/event. Approval from Recreation Therapy Department supervisor may be required.

· Equipment needs/request must be submitted and verified before approval for use.

· Proper PPE provided as required.
