Trinity Las Americas UMC1548 8th StreetDes Moines, IA 50314
Basic class at 8th & College
Students work at their own speed supported by volunteers

Our English program, which has been ongoing since 2001, is geared to adult learners, most of them with minimal English skills, whose work or family obligations prevent attendance at formal classes run by DMACC at various locations. Often students have started class well into the semester or have missed some classes and need extra help, and the teaching assistants help those students keep up with the class . Teachers and teaching assistants volunteer Tuesday or Thursday evenings from 6 PM to 8 PM in a specific classroom so they develop a relationship with the students and understand what their needs are. Our program includes classes in four levels, but the greatest need for help is in Basic and Level 1. Assistants may occasionally need to cover for the regular teacher, which is why we try to keep the same helpers every week so you will already feel comfortable with the students and they will have confidence in you. Teachers and assistants receive training and materials. There is a fifteen minute break during each evening where all have an opportunity to socialize and get to know each other. We also have celebrations at the end of each semester which include a potluck and party.
