Basic class at 8th & College
Students work at their own speed supported by volunteers

Our program is well established in the community and has been ongoing in the same location since 2001. We offer English classes in four or five levels, using a text and workbook across all levels. The majority of our students are Spanish or Arabic speakers, and most classes average ten students per night.

Our classes are set up with one teacher and one assistant on Tuesdays, and a different teacher and assistant on Thursdays. Teachers and teaching assistants volunteer from 6 PM to 8 PM in a specific classroom so they develop a relationship with the students and understand what their needs are. The lead teachers have a teacher's manual and will need to prepare for an hour or two in advance.

Students can start class whenever they find out about it and because of various obligations many of them miss class frequently so students are at different levels within a given class and some need one on one help. We often have service learning students helping in our classes and all the assistants work with students to help them catch/keep up.

Most of our volunteers have been with us for several years, some more than that, and we want to welcome you to our learning community! This year we are especially needing volunteers who can participate on Thursdays so we hope this is you!

Mission Statement

The ELL program, a project of Eighth & College Connections, is a multicultural, multilingual community that welcomes all people who wish to expand their English skills and form friendships across social barriers in order to enrich their lives and help shape a deeper and more welcoming community.

Our primary project is English classes in four levels for immigrant and refugee adults, with a free childcare program to allow parents with children to attend.
