Two teachers are urgently needed: one to work with pre-literate adult refugee students who are working on the alphabet, writing their names, and very basic verbal skills. That group varies but is never more than four students. The other is to work with our most advanced students, also from two to four students, using a textbook and working on reading comprehension and practicing correct verb forms and other grammatical details in speech. You will get training and support and probably fall in love with your students like we all do!
We also always need volunteers to work in Basic and Level 1 assisting the teacher. Those volunteers are assigned to a specific class so you will get to know the students and they will get to know you.
Teachers and teaching assistants volunteer Tuesday or Thursday evenings from 6 PM to 8 PM in a specific classroom so they develop a relationship with the students and understand what their needs are. We have classes in 4 levels but most of the students are in Basic or Level 1. Students can start class whenever they find out about it so they are at different levels within a given class and some need one on one help.
Most of our volunteers have been with us for several years, some more than that, and we want to welcome you to our learning community!
